A new garden

tuin provinciehuis - lente 2024

When the province put the design brief for a new provincial building out to tender, its basic concept was to ‘merge’ the fragmented small parks in the area into one larger green space and make it accessible to the public. Constructing a more compact building means that there is more space available for greenery – in this case, a garden of 23,000 m².

All parking is underground and covered by a 7,000 m² green roof. Where the old provincial tower was surrounded by concrete and asphalt, there are now grass and shrubs instead, plus a wide variety of native plants. The garden is managed ecologically, with no use of artificial fertilisers or pesticides.

The garden also contains artworks, such as Pol Bury’s striking fountain sculpture.
