Democratic government

As a government layer, the Province of Antwerp is the intermediary administrative level between the federal and Flemish government on the one hand and the municipalities on the other hand. The Province of Antwerp would like to play a connecting role across municipal boundaries. The government is committed to acting as a partner to our 69 municipalities where people live and to the associations and overarching organisations working for the interests of those inhabitants.

    The Board of Vice-Governors (Deputatie) is in charge of the day-to-day running and ensures the political decisions are prepared and implemented on the ground.

    The Governor is the link between the four administrative levels: the federal government, the Flemish region, the province and the municipalities.

    The Secretary-General heads the administrative department of the provincial government. He or she is the link between policy and administration.
